Dog Biopsy Cost

2026 U.S. dog tumor, lipoma and mass-removal pricing sourced from NAPHIA filings, Vet Receipts invoice data, and 1,400+ clinic surveys.

A biopsy is the act of sampling tissue for diagnosis. There are four types commonly used in canine oncology, and each has a distinct cost spine. This page separates them so an owner searching for one specific method gets a direct answer without wading through irrelevant alternatives.

Four Biopsy Types — When Each Is Used

Biopsy typeTissue sampleProcedureUse caseAvg cost (2026)
Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA)Cells only (no architecture)22–25 g needle, syringe, often done awakeLymph node, mast cell tumour, cutaneous mass$50–$200
Tru-cut / Core biopsy (needle core)Tissue core with architectureLarger bore needle, often sedationLiver, spleen, deep masses$300–$700
Punch biopsy4–8 mm cylindrical plugDisposable punch, slight sedationSkin tumour of unknown type$300–$900
Incisional biopsyWedge of the tumourSurgical cut into the massLarge mass before definitive surgery$500–$1,500
Excisional biopsyThe entire tumour (with margins)Full surgical excisionWhen you want diagnosis + cure in one procedure$250–$1,500 (depends on size)

This page exists because each biopsy type has its own bill line, and lumping them under "biopsy" obscures cost-relevant decisions.

Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) — The Lowest-Cost Path

Cost Breakdown

ComponentCost
Vet consult$90
FNA procedure (no sedation, 2–4 sticks)$50–$170
Cytology read (in-house vet)included
Cytology read (sent out to IDEXX / Antech / pathologist)$80–$150 added
Total$140–$320

Source: PetMD — FNA cost.

FNA is the best first step for any external mass. It can be done awake in 60 seconds, costs ~$140–$320 all-in, and often gives a definitive benign-vs-malignant answer. Source: VCA Hospitals — Cytology for Tumours.

FNA Limitations

Critical: FNA cannot reliably distinguish benign from low-grade malignant mast cell tumour because it doesn't preserve cell architecture. If FNA says "round-cell tumour" or "mast cell tumour," a punch or excisional biopsy is the next step to grade the tumor. Source: NC State VetDerm MCT.

Tru-cut / Core Needle Biopsy — When Architecture Matters

Used for internal masses: liver, spleen, lymph node deep, prostate. Tru-cut provides a tissue cylinder, which preserves enough architecture for histologic grading.

ComponentCost
Sedation or short anesthesia$200–$400
Ultrasound-guided biopsy$200–$500 (combined with ultrasound fee)
Tru-cut needle + consumables$50–$150
Histopathology$200–$300
Total$650–$1,350

Tru-cut has a complication rate of 3–5 % (mostly bleeding; rarely fatal). It's typically reserved for internal imaging where the alternatives are worse.

Punch Biopsy — Most Common Skin Biopsy

A 4–8 mm skin plug, taken with a disposable circular punch. Best for subcutaneous masses of unknown type before full excision.

ComponentCost
Vet consult$90
Sedation + brief mask anesthesia$150–$250
Local anaesthetic block$30–$60
Punch biopsy (one site)$120–$200
Suture closure + bandage$50–$100
Histopathology$200–$300
Recovery monitoring$40–$80
Total$680–$1,080

50th percentile for punch biopsy: ~$550.

Incisional Biopsy — When You Need a Bigger Sample

A wedge of the tumour taken during a small surgical procedure, before deciding on full excision. Indicated for:

  • Very large tumours where you want pre-op pathology
  • Tumours near complex anatomy (eyelid, oral, nose)
  • Suspected aggressive malignancy requiring pre-op grading
ComponentCost
Vet consult$120
Pre-anesthetic bloodwork$130
Anesthesia (30–60 min)$250–$400
Incisional wedge$200–$400
Suture closure$80–$120
Histopathology$250–$400
Recovery + recheck$90
Total$1,120–$1,660

Excisional Biopsy — Removal = Diagnosis

When the entire tumour is removed and submitted for histology, the surgery IS the biopsy. This is the most common pathway for clearly delineated single masses of moderate size.

Size categoryAvg cost (excision + histology included)
<2 cm$250–$500
2–5 cm$400–$900
5–10 cm$700–$1,500
>10 cm$1,000–$2,500

Often preferred because it avoids a second procedure; one round of anesthesia for both diagnosis and treatment.

When Pathology Reading Adds to Cost

Most biopsies include veterinary pathologist interpretation. Some send-outs add cost:

Sub-panelAdded costWhen it's needed
Immunohistochemistry (IHC)$80–$200 (per stain)Confirm melanoma vs MCT
Ki-67 proliferative index$80–$140Predict MCT recurrence risk
PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement (PARR)$200–$350Distinguish vaccine-site sarcoma vs lymphoma
Stage ladder + margins$20–$80Most histopathology reports include this

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest biopsy for dogs? FNA = $50–$200, total bill $140–$320 with cytology. Source: PetMD FNA.

Does a biopsy always need anesthesia? FNA does not. Tru-cut does (sedation or short general). Punch biopsy needs brief sedation. Incisional and excisional biopsies need full anaesthetic protocol. Source: PetInsurePrime.

Will pet insurance cover biopsy? Most accident-illness plans cover biopsy as part of the diagnostic process leading to a covered illness. Source: Progressive Cancer Coverage.

How long does it take to get results?

  • In-house FNA cytology: 30 min–24 hours
  • External lab cytology: 2–5 days
  • Histopathology: 3–7 days
  • IHC/PARR add-on: 7–14 days

Source: NC State VTH turnaround times.

Is a biopsy going to spread cancer? For most canine tumours, the answer is no for FNA and minimally invasive biopsies. There are theoretical concerns about seeding tumour cells along needle tracts for sarcomas, but clinically significant seeding is rare in dogs.
