What "Overnight Hospitalisation" Includes

Different tiers of hospitalisation include overlapping bundles of services. Here is what a typical mid‑tier overnight stay covers:

  • Cage or run appropriate to your pet's size.
  • Twice-daily walks for dogs (additional cost for solo walks or extended time outside).
  • Vitals checks every 4–6 hours by a licensed veterinary technician.
  • Continued IV fluids at the prescribed rate.
  • Scheduled injectable medications (pain relief, anti‑nausea, antibiotics).
  • Feeding per owner instructions, or a standard recovery diet.
  • Overnight veterinarian on duty for emergencies.
  • Discharge consult the next morning.

It does not typically include: recheck imaging, bloodwork drawn during the stay, additional medications added in the middle of the night, or surgery follow‑up procedures. Each of these is billed separately.

Hospitalisation at a Teaching Hospital vs Private Hospital

A veterinary teaching hospital affiliated with a university (e.g., UC Davis, Cornell, Texas A&M, Penn Vet, Purdue) typically charges 15–30% less than a comparable private specialty hospital for the same overnight stay, because:

  • Residents (vets in training) provide clinical care at lower billing rates than board-certified specialists.
  • Teaching hospitals have on-site diagnostic labs that reduce send-out fees.
  • They receive state funding and university subsidies.

But you may wait longer to be seen because teaching hospitals triage emergencies alongside routine referrals. Source: Webvet teaching hospital comparison.

Cost-Saving Strategies for Overnight Stays

  1. Ask about partial-day hospitalisation. If your pet is stabilising, you may be allowed to take them home in the late afternoon rather than paying for a full 24-hour cycle.
  2. Negotiate "tech-only overnight" rates. Some hospitals will let you take your pet home at midnight with a tech check in the morning for a reduced fee.
  3. Bring your own food. Some hospitals charge $5–$15 per meal of in-house diet; if your pet is on a specific diet, bring a supply.
  4. Decline optional recheck bloodwork. If your pet is clinically improving, a recheck bloodwork at 4 a.m. adds $200+ — usually unnecessary.
  5. Use CareCredit. A multi‑night stay ($3,000–$5,000) is well within CareCredit's 12–24 month interest-free window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay overnight with my pet? Some emergency hospitals allow owners to remain in the waiting room 24/7 but very few allow in-cage boarding or sleeping in the treatment area. If you want to stay, ask when you arrive — policies vary.

Will my pet be supervised all night? Yes, but the level of supervision differs by hospitalisation tier. Basic monitoring may be vitals every 4–6 hours by a technician overnight; ICU includes continuous technician presence.

Can I bring my pet home overnight and bring them back in the morning? Sometimes. If they are stable, ambulatory, eating, and you can administer medications and maintain IV fluids at home. Most hospitals will not allow this for surgical or ICU cases.

Are overnight stays charged in 12-hour or 24-hour blocks? Usually 24-hour blocks per "night," starting at the time of intake. A stay from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day is typically one night.
