Cytopoint Injection Frequency and Annual Cost

2026 U.S. Cytopoint (lokivetmab) and allergy-treatment pricing sourced from national fee schedules, insurer filings, and peer-reviewed studies.

How often you give Cytopoint is the single biggest cost driver for most dogs. This guide shows how to convert "every N weeks" into dollars per year, by dog weight and city tier.

How Often Dogs Typically Need Cytopoint

The Zoetis product information recommends redosing every 4 to 8 weeks, based on relapse of itch. Real-world data from the PMC long-term lokivetmab study (2024 follow-up, n=355 dogs across multiple U.S. dermatology clinics) shows:

Injection intervalShare of dogsMost common in
Every 4 weeks25%Severe year-round allergies, large/giant breeds
Every 5–6 weeks38%Medium-large dogs, especially seasonal flare
Every 7–8 weeks30%Small dogs, mild or well-controlled atopic dermatitis
Less than 4 weeks (off-label)2%Very severe cases
More than 8 weeks (off-label)5%Mild seasonal allergies, senior dogs with diminishing symptoms

Annual Cost by Frequency (Per Injection Average)

How many injections per year = 52 ÷ interval weeks:

  • Every 4 weeks = 13 injections
  • Every 5 weeks = 10–11 injections
  • Every 6 weeks = 9 injections
  • Every 7 weeks = 7–8 injections
  • Every 8 weeks = 6–7 injections

Average per-injection cost × number of injections = annual cost.

Finding Your Dog's Personal Interval

Three practical methods to determine the correct frequency:

  1. Vet's starter protocol. Most vets begin Cytopoint on a 4-week interval and reassess after the first injection. If itch is well controlled at the 4-week visit, they'll extend to 5 or 6 weeks for the next dose.
  2. Owner-side calendar log. Note injection date and itch return date. After 3–4 cycles, your average is established. Some owners find their dog does best at 5.5 weeks — exactly at the median of the FDA-cleared range.
  3. Symptom diary score. Use a 0–10 itch scale (canine atopic dermatitis severity, CADESI). If your dog's score remains ≤2 at 4 weeks, with no scratching/biting/licking visible, the interval is correct; if it climbs to ≥5, the interval is too long and you need 4-week scheduling. When to Tighten the Interval

Three scenarios where the vet will shorten the interval (or dose):

ScenarioAdjustment
Scratching returns at week 4Move to 4-week interval or higher dose
Sensitivity rising despite season-stable weatherLikely worsening allergies; shorten interval
Body condition changes (dog's weight increased substantially)Re-dose per current weight
Two failed cycles within 4 weeks of each otherConsider switching to Apoquel or adding Apoquel between doses

When to Lengthen the Interval

Three scenarios where the vet will lengthen the interval (reducing annual cost):

ScenarioAdjustment
Dog is on immunotherapy and improvingTry extending to 6–8 weeks
Symptom-free between injections after 4 cyclesLikely looking at 2-month intervals
Allergy season ends (winter for many allergens)Some dogs go off Cytopoint for 2–4 months
Combination with Apoquel between injectionsOften allows lengthening

Lifetime Cost Projections

A small dog (under 20 lb) at a 7-week interval for 10 years:

Cost componentAnnual10-year total
Cytopoint (7 shots × $90)$630$6,300
Office fees (already in shot cost)——
Apoquel bridge (3 months/year at $30)$90$900
Total$720$7,200

A large dog (60–80 lb) at a 5-week interval for 10 years:

Cost componentAnnual10-year total
Cytopoint (10 shots × $260 avg)$2,600$26,000
Apoquel$200$2,000
Total$2,800$28,000

A giant dog (110+ lb) at a 4-week interval for 10 years:

Cost componentAnnual10-year total
Cytopoint (13 shots × $400)$5,200$52,000
Apoquel bridge$300$3,000
Total$5,500$55,000

This is exactly why pet insurance is heavily advertised in the allergy-treatment space. Lifetime Cytopoint cost for a giant breed can equal the cost of a small used car.

Geographic Modifier

City tier multiplies per-injection cost and therefore annual cost:

Saving Money Without Compromising Care

  1. Pre-book appointments. Many clinics will honour the same per-injection rate if you're on a recurring schedule. Negotiated discount: 5–10 %.
  2. Ask about multi-dose vial pricing. If your dog needs multiple vials (large breeds), some vets carry 30 mg + 40 mg vials separately at lower per-milligram markup.
  3. Use a CareCredit 18-month plan if paying out-of-pocket. Annual cost spread over 18-month 0% APR is manageable.
  4. Combine with pet insurance early. Pre-existing avoidance is worth tens of thousands over a lifetime.
  5. Consider allergen immunotherapy once stable. After 1–2 years of Cytopoint stabilisation, immunotherapy can reduce Cytopoint required frequency by 30–60 % in many dogs. Source: NC State VetDerm — Immunotherapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Cytopoint injections does my dog need per year? Average: 7–10 injections per year, depending on dog size and individual response. The smallest dogs on the longest interval (8 weeks) may need only 6–7 per year; giant breeds on the shortest interval (4 weeks) may need 13 per year.

Can Cytopoint be given every 4 weeks long-term? Yes — no safety issue. The Zoetis labeling allows intervals of 4 weeks or longer. Source: Zoetis label.

What if the itch returns before 4 weeks? That is off-label use. Most vets will not give it more often than every 4 weeks because the body's natural clearance makes earlier dosing mostly wasteful. They will add Apoquel between injections instead.

Can Cytopoint be given at the same time as annual vaccines? Yes — there's no conflict. Many vets give Cytopoint alongside yearly boosters for convenience.

Can I pre-pay for Cytopoint at a discount? Some clinics offer "wellness packages" that bundle Cytopoint with annual exams at 10–15 % off. Ask.
