The old "multiply by 7" rule is wrong. Scientists at UC San Diego developed a DNA-based formula that accurately maps dog aging to human aging. Use it free below.

The science of pet aging, explained.
The old rule that "one dog year equals seven human years" is a myth that significantly overestimates your dog's age in human terms, especially for young dogs and large breeds. The UC San Diego scientific formula, published in 2020, uses DNA methylation patterns to map dog aging to human aging. The result: dogs age much faster in their first two years (reaching human-equivalent age 40 by age 2), then aging slows dramatically. A 1-year-old dog is roughly 31 in human years, not 7.
Our calculator above uses this scientific formula, adjusted for breed size. Small breeds(under 20 lbs) age more slowly after maturity and can live 15–18 years. Medium breeds(20–50 lbs) typically live 12–15 years. Large breeds (50–90 lbs) live 10–12 years, andgiant breeds (over 90 lbs) often only live 8–10 years. This means a 7-year-old Great Dane is a senior citizen, while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is middle-aged.
Cats age differently from dogs. The first year of a cat's life equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (making a 2-year-old cat 24 in human years), and each subsequent year adds roughly 4 human years. So a 10-year-old cat is approximately 56 in human years, and a 15-year-old cat is about 76. Indoor cats typically live 15–20 years, while outdoor cats average only 4–5 years due to accidents, disease, and predators.
Cats are considered senior at age 11 and geriatric at age 15. Senior cats need more frequent vet checkups (every 6 months), bloodwork to monitor kidney and thyroid function, and adjustments to diet and activity. See our senior pet care costs guide for what to expect.
Understanding your pet's human-equivalent age helps you:
Use our calculator above to find your pet's human-equivalent age, then plan accordingly for their life stage. Early intervention for age-related conditions can add years to your pet's life and save thousands in veterinary costs.
